CNN President worried about Social Media

And he should be!

I still listen to news radio (only when I am not in the mood for my usual selection of 80’s hair band metal) when I am driving to our Ulistic office in Southeast Calgary.  It is only for the 15 minute drive, just enough to get the latest traffic, stock market information and news headlines.  Sometimes, I will even tune into Dave Rutherford to hear his daily rant on QR77 or listen to what Charles Adler has to say in the afternoon.  That is the extent of my news watching, listening or reading.

I read the Calgary Herald Business Section the odd Monday morning just to see what new small businesses are starting up and the odd time will I read or even glance through the entire morning paper.  When I travel in the United States, the hotels deliver USA Today or Wall Street Journal or other US Papers which usually end up in a pile in one corner of my hotel room.  Goes to show that the news in print for me is just something I am not interested in reading.

I, perhaps like many of our colleagues are electing to tune into online sources for news.  Why?  Perhaps it is the grass-roots reporting, the real story without the right or left-wing opinions attached with the story.  I will however tune into my niche blogs on the industries I work with and have Twitter alert me when something happens which requires my attention.  How about you?

This weekend I read an interesting article online on how the President of CNN is concerned about Social Media.  I am not shocked by this concern from a major US media source and I am sure others in the world share this concern.   CNN and all major news outlets should be concerned on the power of social media has for sharing of news related items.  There is an old saying, see it in the paper tomorrow, see on TV later in the day, hear about it soon on radio or get notified immediately on social media.  This is where news is now breaking and you just need to turn to the US Airways crash in New York for an example of the power of Social Media in the news world today.

Today my news sources are guys like Chris Brogan, Joe Panettieri, Larry Walsh, Bob Burg – just to name a few.  These guys are now journalists in our online world. I truly trust what they have to say for the niches I follow.

I made my mistakes marketing online

I made my share of mistakes when I first started playing with marketing online.  I still make the odd mistake and do the odd bonehead thing.  I am learning as well.  However, learning from my mistakes is critical to my overall success as a Calgary social media consultant and my mistakes are things I can now teach my best clients.

Now today, I understand social media services are designed to share ideas, concepts, offer advice but not to aggressively sell or spam those around us.  This happened twice to meetup.com groups in Calgary which David (my partner at Ulistic) and I are members of.  One was for a “self-claimed” SEO expert in Calgary and the other a “sort of” business coach.

In my review of successful business people in Calgary, they simple don’t do this stuff.  So my only conclusion is that if Ulistic wants to be a truly successful SEO and Social Media firm we need to practice the behaviours of those who we look up too, not those who we look down on.

Meetup.com idea feature being hit by spammers in Calgary

Recently meetup.com, one of the leading social networking sites which encourage online networking with traditional face-to-face networking added some new skins, designs and functionality with the introduction of some new features.  Meetup.com is a wonderful tool to bring people together who have similar interests, share ideas and for us business-focused people learn and share our business stories.

One of these new features is called “ideas”.  Not a bad thing for group members to share ideas and concepts however when some awesome functionality is added the spammers also can take advantage of something which is meant for the overall good.  Over the past couple of days some so-called Calgary Internet Marketers have started spammy activities these new lists on meetup.com.

David and I run two very successful meetup groups in Calgary focused on the entrepreneur community and also a good group committed on bringing together information technology professionals together. The Calgary Entrepreneur and Business Professionals Group and also Tech Brew Calgary are now in full swing.  Unfortunately because of these spam activities we have been forced to restrict access by approving new members until everyone is confirmed as a legitimate businesses.

G0od thing these so-called professionals haven’t found our LinkedIn groups yet.

Marketing Right Now For Winners

There is a new book available that every entrepreneur and SoHo (Small office home office) owner should read.    It is called Marketing Right Now.

You should not confuse it with the book featured on the right.  That book may never be on the shelves of your local bookstore, although there is an undoubted need for such a book.  What we are talking about here is an e-book.

The correct title does not include that last For Winners phrase, but be assured that what is included can make your business a winner.  The e-book is available as a free download. 

Although it naturally deals with how to do business on the Internet, the most interesting sections deal with the important steps you should take before you get close to creating a Web page.  If you are to succeed, then you must have a clear strategy.

Some people treat the concept of strategy in a somewhat cavalier fashion. Perhaps without realizing it, you are one of these people.  You can easily check whether you have a clear strategy by answering the following three questions:

  1. What marketing niche will my product or service target?  (What does a typical prospect of look like?)
  2. Who are the strongest competitors going after these same prospects?
  3. How will my product or service offer a superior experience to my target prospects?

Do not feel bad if any of these three questions stump you.  There are a significant number of businesses owners who would be similarly stumped.

Oprah Winfrey Recommends Marketing Right Now

As you may note, the concepts discussed here seem to be getting attention from some very important commentators.  Strategy is challenging because it defines what you will put efforts and resources into and what you will not allow yourself to be diverted by.  This single-minded focus is not easy to achieve and many people almost goof-off in doing whatever comes to mind as they try to grow their business.

This e-book puts the emphasis on this first step of strategy.  That starts with the potential customers you feel your business might serve.  You must be capable of creating a product or service that they will find superior to what the competition is offering.

You can of course sometimes make a reasonable living by having a me-too product or service.  However the Internet is a real threat to such merely adequate suppliers.  Buyers can explore what is available and they will undoubtedly go for the best they can find.

Two important operational details are also emphasized.  If you put Time as Job One, then this can give you an almost instant competitive advantage.  You must also have good communications with your prospects and clients on a continuing basis.  That implies an effective blog.  Without it your business will be hard pressed to grow as it should.
