New HTG Client and Dandelion Marketing

Author: Inside Stuart's head...

This past week I have been working with a fellow Heartland Tech Group member from the Philadelphia, PA area and leader in the Philadelphia Small Business Computer Support market, Jobecca Technology Group.  Michael and I have known each other for a couple of years now and it wasn’t until this past month we decided to work together and what a pleasure it is to have Michael on board as a client with Ulistic.  Today, Ulistic is assisting Michael in taking his web marketing and overall web strategy to a new level.  So far, so good and it is awesome to have this HTG member as a client of our Calgary based Social Media Consulting and Online marketing organization, Ulistic.  Need help 403.775.2205.

See Jobecca’s new Philadelphia Business Computer Support blog today.

I learn from my clients just as much as I hope they learn from my experiences from us working together and with Jobecca, no exception to this rule occurs.  Michael and I share a very close friend Jeremy Epstein from Never Stop Marketing. I have been reading Michael’s blog posts and he reminded me about a focus point our friend Jeremy is talking about on his blog about Dandelin Marketing and the importance of Never Stop Marketing…sorry to the guys at TLC in Calgary…Jeremy coined this phrase long before you guys started using it (see spam emails going around Calgary).

Like Michael and I have mentioned, one of Jeremy’s new or recent discussion points is on Dandelion Marketing.  Are you asking yourself what is Dandelion Marketing? let’s think about this for a second and how dandelions spread in the wild.  Look outside your Calgary home right now, can you see a number of dandelions investing your lawn?  Being the May Long Weekend, it is more than likely that the dandelions are out in full force.  I know my front yard has many of the yellow butter cups showing their face.

In Jeremy’s blog post on Dandelion Marketing, he shares 6 basic concepts on how to share information online with your raving fans and also those who simply like what you have to offer.

  • Know the Commander’s Intent
  • EVERYONE is in marketing.
  • Brand: Feel Over Look.
  • Agile Marketing Development
  • High Fault Tolerance.
  • Rapid Feedback Loops.

Dandelion Marketing is in my opinion is about leverage.  Using the tools available to you, some are actually free and some have a small price tag associated with them to share relevant information with your community and also your raving fans.  Information that is relevant, information they would find interesting and information their follows find interesting and when everything aligns…well look how dandelions spread across the prairie landscape!

The power of raving fans in business

Author: Inside Stuart's head...

Last Tuesday when I skipped out of the HTG meeting with Aaron Booker to see our good buddy Jeremy Epstein speak at the Microsoft Dallas office and didn’t realize what a great reminder I was about to receive on the power of raving fans.

Jeremy Epstein is a marketing guru from Washington, DC. This guy has everything screwed on tight and I am very fortunate to have him as a friend and colleague.  Beside being a friend of Mrs. Epstein’s son Jeremy, I am a raving fan of this guy and when I have an opportunity I toot the Epstein horn.  I stop at getting his face tattooed on my butt, that would be disgusting but let’s look at tattoos for a second and raving fans.

What is the world most popular motorcycle? I bet you will say Harley Davidson.  People spend thousands on Harley’s shirts, wallets with chains and much more.  What other bike manufacturer has 4o year old accountants who dress up on the weekends as bad-ass motorcycle dudes and have Harley tattoos on their body.

Does your business have fans like this?  Hmmm, I don’t think so.  But wouldn’t be nice!

Are there people out there who can’t stop talking about you?  No, maybe you need to look in the mirror then.  If you said yes then way to go. I believe having raving fans in your business starts with applying some of the Go-Giver principles.  Then treating people of respect and wowing the heck out of them so they can’t stop talking about you.  They speak about your business every chance they can, they blog about you, the mention your stuff in their Facebook statuses and they will bend over backwards to help.  I am a raving fan for many of my colleagues in and around Calgary.  From Information Technology firms, bookkeepers, leasing agents…and many more.

A true Raving Fan will be there with you through your darkest hours…hey, I am a raving Leaf fan…I know this!

Ulistic also has our raving fans as well…and thank you to those who share our name out there, sometimes 24 hours a day.

What are you doing to create raving fans in your business?

Remember this…on the extra mile, there are no traffic jams!

What does Web 3.0 mean?

Author: Inside Stuart's head...

I was asked by a reporter today about Web 3.0.  What exactly is Web 3.0?  Pretty broad topic…but here is how I answered the questions.

The world is coming out of the Web 2.0 world, which was really about the tools and people figuring out how to communicate with each other. Many of the world has gotten the tools figured out and some are still working on crafting their own message. I believe we are fully into the Web 3.0 world and my view of Web 3.0 is not about technology or even communication. Web 3.0 is about monetization. How do companies and organizations leverage people, raving fans and cultivate these relationships to drive new opportunities to their business. This also includes damage control online.

I think we can all learn a lesson from Toyota and others who have successful leveraged the Internet to deliver their message to the world, combat negative press and turn a bad PR story into a good story grounded around core characteristics of integrity and doing the right thing.

Companies large and small must now turn to online services and listen. Sometimes saying nothing is just as powerful as broadcasting your message. Companies must understand that the world is talking about them, their competitors and even their industry. How can they listen and then respond rather than reacting to what is happening around them.

I hope this made sense.  Thanks to Jeremy Epstein for some of the insight into this post.

Can spam be linked like sausage?

Author: Stuart R. Crawford

Have you heard of Jeremy Epstein?  I don’t believe he is related to Juan Luis Pedro Philippo DeHuevos Epstein at all?  Actually this Epstein is a fictitious character.   Besides being a handsome man, Jeremy Epstein is a pretty savvy Marketer from the DC area.

Jeremy shared a very interesting story of link spam showing up in his blog the other day and where it came from and who was doing it.  A while back, I was getting a tonne of link spam as well when I installed the IntenseDebate Wordpress plugin.  Stay clear of this plugin all of you WordPress bloggers, total trash and full of spammers who surely increase your comment count but not in a good way.

Jeremy shared a story about four firms who are paying some SEO firm in North Carolina to do SEO work for them.  According to Jeremy’s blog post this SEO firm employs blog commenting and linking tactics aimed to get a higher number of inbound links to their client’s websites.  First off, what about the NOFOLLOW tag Google put in place a while back designed to combat this type of behaviour?  A good SEO firm would understand this loophole has been closed quite sometime ago and link comments don’t work anymore.

Jeremy shared the names of these four firms on his blog post. But I will say this.  There are some SEO firms out there who wound rather take their clients money and run.   I wonder if these four business are even aware that the behaviours of their SEO firm just got them blogged about by my Washington, DC friend.

Question…how do you know what your SEO firm is doing out there?  This is why we are teaching our clients how to do their Calgary SEO work and our approach of education will help your business stay clear of this sort of junk that happens out there.

Buyer beware comes to mind, how are you going to employ your next search engine optimization firm?
