This post is written for Calgary Real Estate Professionals however it applies to every business model

Each week Ulistic, your local Calgary Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimization team hosts a series of webinars to help Calgary business understand online marketing, social media, Internet Technologies and help debunk some of the myths associated with social media and general online marketing.

This week, our team at Ulistic hosted a webinar for a number of Calgary-based REALTORS® on the power of social media and Internet marketing to help them market their listings more efficiently online. This was not a hyped up social media discussion and actually social media was just a sliver of what we discussed during the 60 minute REALTOR® webinar.

Here are some of the highlights and what you can do as a REALTOR® to help place your Real Estate business online.

Success online takes commitment, this is the first crucial step towards success in anything we do. REALTORS® who demonstrate commitment in applying the principles of effective online marketing make great success stories versus those who pay it “lip service”. This is not something you simply set and forget. Online Marketing success takes effort, it takes commitment and it takes time. Set up a schedule and commit to keeping that schedule. For those who were on the webinar, remember F + V = C.

Does your REALTOR® website welcome and convert visitors to potential qualified buyers and sellers? You don’t need another virtual billboard on the Internet highway. Personally, I would rather have 10 solid buyers and sellers visit my site each week versus having thousands of visitors who never engage with me. Does this concept make sense? Your marketing online must attract qualified prospects to your business or why are you doing it? Numbers don’t matter if no one engages with you.

Experiment with new ways of doing the old things. We discussed services like Microsoft Tags and other new technologies can offer the same information to a new audience. Consider attaching tags or bar codes for those interested in learning more about your listings. With smart phones, a potential buyer can easily research your listings with a click of their camera. Microsoft Tag is a great way for you to showcase your listings. Almost everyone today has a smart phone, let’s leverage this for our benefit.

And finally, don’t forget about video. If a picture says a thousand words, then video must say millions. Start using video now in your business and use it for your advantage.

These are just a few of the items we covered during our REALTOR® webinar this week. If you would like to learn more about Social Media for REALTORS® give me a shout at 403.775.2205 and our team at Ulistic would be more than happy to work with you or you can click here to contact me directly online.

It sure is…when done right and teamed up with business professionals.

First off, a big Calgary style thanks to David and our guest of honour Mr. Chris Brogan for a great kick-start to my small business podcast once again. It has been a busy quarter with Ulistic and our weekly podcast took a back-burner position as we ramped up our Small Business Internet Marketing Training Program and all other Social Media Consulting services we are offering to Calgary and International business. Thank goodness Diane (Chris’ Assistant) and I made this appointment many months ago. We felt we had to honour it, and what a show it was and happy we went through with it.

Chris, David and myself chatted like old friends for 30 minutes plus a few extra minutes at the beginning of the call. It was refreshing to hear Chris’ approach on social media and online communities and to know that our approach is not much different from his. For a while now we have been working with small business across Canada and focusing on strategies and techniques on leveraging online services to connect with clients, foster community and create strong alliances.

While some focus on the tools (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn), we have shifted our focus to understanding the process and the messaging but also keeping in check that our clients still have products and services they deliver. They have sales goals to obtain, financial benchmarks to reach and shareholder value to deliver.

Chris also opened my eyes a bit wider to the power of Twitter once again. I am still on the fence about its overall success however I just have to think back to how I met George Garcia at Calgary’s Park2Go. (George dropping my car off on Sunday and next Friday again. I met George through social media services and it is an honour to call George a friend and a trusted colleague.)

So many great new ideas were shared during Chris Brogan’s appearance on the Ulistic Orange Files Podcast. Download our show now at Canadian Small Business Social Media Podcast.

Be careful what you wish for eh! Ulistic is having one crazy busy week but we are having a blast.

My blogging has been pretty light this week, some of you may actually be happy about this. It is simply because we have an abundance of proposals and training sessions going on this week. In the past week Ulistic has brought on two new mentoring clients in the US, working with firms in Houston and Seattle and most recently speaking to another firm in Tampa about how we can help them win new opportunities with effective online marketing strategies. Combine this with our local obligations…well it is amazing and we are very blessed to say the least. I simply love to serve those companies interested in learning more about how their business can prosper by leveraging online marketing.

I started a Facebook debate on Wednesday evening around the “Social Media Expert” topic. For those who follow my blog know that I absolutely detest those who claim to be social media experts and have no business substance or experience to support their claim. This Facebook discussion focuses around those who claim to be social media experts however lack business acumen on how social media can actually fit into their business model and the actual goals of the corporation.

Want to the join the discussion, visit Stuart Crawford Facebook profile to join in.

And he should be!

I still listen to news radio (only when I am not in the mood for my usual selection of 80’s hair band metal) when I am driving to our Ulistic office in Southeast Calgary. It is only for the 15 minute drive, just enough to get the latest traffic, stock market information and news headlines. Sometimes, I will even tune into Dave Rutherford to hear his daily rant on QR77 or listen to what Charles Adler has to say in the afternoon. That is the extent of my news watching, listening or reading.

I read the Calgary Herald Business Section the odd Monday morning just to see what new small businesses are starting up and the odd time will I read or even glance through the entire morning paper. When I travel in the United States, the hotels deliver USA Today or Wall Street Journal or other US Papers which usually end up in a pile in one corner of my hotel room. Goes to show that the news in print for me is just something I am not interested in reading.

I, perhaps like many of our colleagues are electing to tune into online sources for news. Why? Perhaps it is the grass-roots reporting, the real story without the right or left-wing opinions attached with the story. I will however tune into my niche blogs on the industries I work with and have Twitter alert me when something happens which requires my attention. How about you?

This weekend I read an interesting article online on how the President of CNN is concerned about Social Media. I am not shocked by this concern from a major US media source and I am sure others in the world share this concern. CNN and all major news outlets should be concerned on the power of social media has for sharing of news related items. There is an old saying, see it in the paper tomorrow, see on TV later in the day, hear about it soon on radio or get notified immediately on social media. This is where news is now breaking and you just need to turn to the US Airways crash in New York for an example of the power of Social Media in the news world today.

Today my news sources are guys like Chris Brogan, Joe Panettieri, Larry Walsh, Bob Burg – just to name a few. These guys are now journalists in our online world. I truly trust what they have to say for the niches I follow.

I woke up this morning to a Google Alert from my friend Arlin Sorensen, the founder of Heartland Tech Groups (HTG). Thanks Arlin for the wonderful compliments and sound vote of confidence in my pursuit to help Information Technology Professionals, Calgary business and small business worldwide understand how they can leverage Social Media to do great things online.

It is great for the potential opportunity to be the HTG Social Media dude.

Also good luck to North Battleford Computer Specialist, Brad Kowerchuk who will be taking my place on the HTG Advisory Council.

With Brad’s appointment, we bid farewell to Stuart Crawford who has served on the advisory council since its inception a few years ago. Stuart was part of HTG3 before moving to help us begin our first international group in Canada, where he facilitated HTG10 for a year and a half. Stuart has a passion to help people, and caught the Go Giver bug in ways that became contagious. He leaves us to pursue his passion around social media and the web. He is consulting for businesses in his hometown of Calgary and around the globe as he serves people and their desire to learn how to leverage the communication tools of the 21st century. Thank you Stuart for your hard work and contributions to helping HTG become what it is today.
